A Time and Season for Everything

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”

Introduction: Do you like CHANGES? Most people are creatures of habit….including me. But life is full of CHANGES! Seasons change; People change; Life changes. Are you going thru a CHANGE right now? How are you doing? Solomon wrote about the seasons of CHANGE:

1. What SEASON are you in, in your life right now? (Eccl 3:1, 2)
“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.”

• What is your physical age? Your season? 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s? Beyond?
• What is your spiritual age?
* New believer
* Unbeliever
* Maturing believer
* Immature believer

2. How are you doing in this SEASON of your life? (Eccl 3:3,4)
“A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

• At this time, are you building up?
• At this time, are you tearing down?

3. Where does God want to make some CHANGES in this SEASON of your life? (Eccl 3:5-8)
“A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time of love, and a time of hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.”

• What time is it IN you?
• What time is it in those AROUND you?
* Make the most of your time! (Eph 5:16)

Conclusion: Eternity is set in our hearts…there is a longing within each of us to fulfill our God-given purpose, and ultimately reach our final destination with Jesus in heaven. Meanwhile, changes are inevitable; but changes ordered by the Lord bring about His will and plan. “He hath made everything beautiful in his time; also he set the world in their heart…” (Eccl 3:11)

Why not PURPOSE in your heart to fulfill His will the remainder of your life?

Extraordinary Faith

Luke 17:5, 6

“And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith. And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.”

Introduction: How many of us would like to “Increase Our Faith”? Do you need “increased faith”? Perhaps we all do! Extraordinary Faith is available for ordinary believers….who believe BIG! “Faith” in Jesus does not mean everything always turns out the way we want it to. Rather, “Faith” in Jesus means we trust Him no matter what (see Heb 11:1-6). Like the New Testament disciples, we must learn to depend on His Word regardless of the circumstances. Luke, the historian and physician, recommends (3) remedies for EXTRAORDINARY FAITH!

1. Why do we need EXTRAORDINARY FAITH? (Luke 17:5)
“And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith.”

• Because of our problems {What’s yours?}
• Because of God’s promises {Do you know them?}

2. When can we expect EXTRAORDINARY FAITH? (Luke 17:6)
“And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.” {Sycamine tree is sometimes translated mulberry}

• Faith in the Old Testament demonstrated
* Abel
* Enoch
* Noah
* Abraham
* Jacob
* Moses
* Joshua
* Gideon
* Deborah
* Ruth
* Jeremiah
* Elijah
* Elisha

• Faith in the New Testament illustrated
* Centurion (Matt 7)
* Syrophoenician woman (Matt 15)
* Sinful woman (Luke 7)
* Lydia
* Barnabas

3. How can we have EXTRAORDINARY FAITH? (Luke 17:6)
“If ye…have faith as a grain of mustard seed.”

• Look back to God’s Provisions
• Look forward to God’s Vision

Conclusion: Simply put, the way to have EXTRAORDINARY FAITH is to remember to LOOK “BACK” in CELEBRATION to what Jesus has done; LOOK “IN” to see the TRANSFORMATION in your life what the Holy Spirit is doing; and LOOK “OUT” with EXPECTATION to what our Lord is going to do as we trust Him! Faith impresses Jesus… after all… He is the author and finisher of our faith.

Revival or Survival?

Psalm 138:1-7

I will praise thee with my whole heart: before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul. All the kings of the earth shall praise thee, O Lord, when they hear the words of thy mouth. Yea, they shall sing in the ways of the Lord: for great is the glory of the Lord. Though the Lord be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off. Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me: thou shalt stretch forth thine hand against the wrath of mine enemies, and thy right hand shall save me.”

Introduction: Do you feel spiritually drained? Do your spiritual batteries need recharging? Could you use a renewing in your heart? How about the great need for the “peace of God” to guard your divided and troubled mind? Is REVIVAL an option or a necessity? David gives some insight to this dilemma. Two (2) questions need to be asked as well as answered in the following sequence:

1. When can we EXPECT a REVIVAL? (Psa 138:7)
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me.”

• When we return to our 1st Love (Psa 138:1, 2)
• When we return to the Word of God (Psa 138:2)
• When we get humble before God (Psa 138:6)

2. How can we tell we need a REVIVAL? (Psa 138:7)
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, thou wilt revive me.”

• When we neglect prayer
• When we neglect soul winning
• When we lose our passion for spiritual things

Conclusion: These trying and troubling days are requiring God’s people to be full of FAITH and RESURRECTION POWER in order to flesh out the Christian life. But He is our source! Revival is possible… daily as we abide in Him.

Revive us again, Lord!

Forever Friends

Mark 2:1-16

Introduction: Do you have a REAL FRIEND? Our life is filled with a lot of acquaintances. But when all is said and done…. very few – REAL FRIENDS! A newspaper decided to have a contest to decide the best definition of a FRIEND: ** The winner said, “A friend is someone who multiplies your joy and divides your grief.” ** The runner up said, “A friend is someone who comes in when the world goes out.”

Mark’s gospel records (3) ways to tell if you are a REAL FRIEND:

1. REAL FRIENDS bring their friends to Jesus! (Mark 2:1-4)
“And they come into him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was born of four….and when they could not come night unto him….they uncovered the roof….they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.”

• REAL friends carry other friends (v 3)
• REAL friends will not be discouraged, they will get their friends to Jesus (v 4)

2. REAL FRIENDS bring their friends to Jesus to be forgiven, because they’ve been forgiven! (Mark 2:5-11)
“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”

• Jesus saw their faith (Faith moves the Master)
• Jesus forgave his sin

3. REAL FRIENDS bring their friends to Jesus, then they find FREEDOM! (Mark 2:1)
“And immediately he arose, took up the bed…they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.”

• Jesus heals spiritual sickness
• Jesus heals physical sickness

Conclusion: Do you know in order to have a FRIEND you must first show yourself to be friendly? (Prov 18:24)

Why not purpose in your heart to get a FRIEND to Jesus?

Will you be a REAL FRIEND?

Where Are We Heading?

Deuteronomy 11:10-12
For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs: But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.”

Introduction: Have you asked the question….”Where in the world are we heading?” Do you ever wonder, “what’s on the other side?” I’m glad to tell you that we can have assurance & confidence when we TRUST in the Lord that He will both provide and guide all the days of our life. The book of Deuteronomy is called the 2nd law. Why? Because Moses was giving instructions to the younger generation (Israeli people) about entering the promised land. You’ll recall due to their unbelief (Num 13, 14), they could not enter into the place of rest (Heb 3, 4) that God had promised them. Unbelief always short circuits the power and provisions of God (Heb 11:6)! As with the children of Israel (even though the Church does not REPLACE them), we can identify with their dilemma today in (3) ways:

1. Where we are heading today are PLACES we have never been before! (Deut 11:10)
“For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out.”

• Egypt, a PLACE of bondage
• Canaan, a PLACE of Victory

2. Where we are heading today are PLACES that will have its UPS and DOWNS! (Deut 11: 11)
“But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven.”

• Uphill battles to fight
• Downhill valleys to walk

3. Where we are heading today are PLACES to see the WATCH-CARE of our Lord! (Deut 11:12)
“A land which the Lord thy God careth for: the eyes of the Lord thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.”

• God will take care of us
• God will watch over us

Conclusion: Even though we may not be sure about what tomorrow may bring or where we will end up down the road, we can REST in the PEACE of the Lord JESUS CHRIST (personal relationship) knowing He is going to be with us every step of the way. So be BLESSED, and REST, from unnecessary STRESS, because as Moses said, there will be TESTS that will bring out heavens BEST!

Triumphant Truths for Troubled Times

2 Corinthians 2:14-16

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?”

Introduction: These are “TROUBLED TIMES”! Yet, our Lord Jesus Christ has blazed a trail before us with His sacrificial death and glorious resurrection; furthermore, His daily PRESENCE within us, along with His PROMISE to come back for us empowers every believer with hope and assurance for not only abundant living, but also eternal life. Paul gives CHRISTians (4) ways to trust “Triumphant Truths for Troubled Times”!

1. Christ-centered IDENTIFICATION! (2 Cor 2:14)
“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ.”

• Brand new Love
• Brand new Lord
• Brand new Life

2. Faith-based TRANSFORMATION! (2 Cor 2:14)
“And maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.”

• Living by Feelings
• Living by Faith

3. Spirit – filled PARTICIPATION! (2 Cor 2:15)
“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish.”

• Imitation
• Participation

4. God-honoring MANIFESTATION! (2 Cor 2:16)
“To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life.”

• Fresh fruit
• Rotten fruit

Conclusion: Paul, no doubt, pictures the victorious procession of a conquering army. As they march TRIUMPHANTLY thru the streets of Rome…. the conquering general, with a crown on his head, rides in a chariot pulled by horses. The defeated armies are dragged thru the streets, weapons broken. The victorious army follows behind shouting “TRIUMPH”! Trumpets sound and incense burns and fills the air with a sweet aroma. This scene is pictured by Paul in this passage of Scripture. We “TRIUMPH” in Christ!!

He Touched Me

Mark 8:22-26
“And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.”

Introduction: I love the song, “Shackled by a heavy burden, neath the load of guilt and shame… but the hand of Jesus touched me, and now I am no longer the same…. He touched me, Ohhhh….. He touched me, and Oh the joy that floods my soul. …something happened and now I know…. He touched me and made me whole.” Mark, secretary to Peter, wrote in his gospel (believed by some to be the earliest), of a blind man’s supernatural encounter with Jesus. Jesus wants to TOUCH our blind eyes and dull hearts today.

Check it out:
1. A blind man had a NEED! (Mark 8:22)
“And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.”
• First, we’ve got to get people to JESUS
• JESUS can touch them and heal them

2. JESUS met that NEED! (Mark 8:23)
“And he took the blind man, and led him out of town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.”
• “He led him out of town” – this is a picture of people leaving (out of town) their sin
• “He spit on his eyes”- this is a picture (to me) of the red crimson flowing blood of Jesus that washes our sin away and opens up spiritually blind eyes

3. You have a NEED – JESUS can meet that NEED! (Mark 8:24, 25)
• Spiritual need?
• Physical need?
• Emotional need?
• Relational need?
• Financial need?
• Vocational need?

Conclusion: Before writing this devotion, I talked and prayed with a man who told me his wife, who had been going through chemotherapy and radiation to treat cancer (3-4 months), just heard back from the doctor she is now CANCER FREE! Needless to say, we rejoiced and praised the GREAT PHYSICIAN, our Lord Jesus Christ, for using doctors and medicine, but ultimately JESUS TOUCHED her body!! Jesus can TOUCH your SIN-SICK body and bring spiritual healing. Jesus can touch your diseased body and bring physical healing. Has He “TOUCHED” you?

Christian Meditation on God’s Creation and Written Revelation

Psalm 19:1-14
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

Introduction: If you want to see the 1st HEAVENS, you can look up in the DAY. If you want to see the 2nd HEAVENS, you can gaze up at NIGHT. But if you want to see the 3rd HEAVENS, you can only see it by FAITH! (Heb 11:1-6) David describes all three, and how to bring a little HEAVEN to your soul.

1. Look at the PRESENCE of God’s CREATION! (Psa 19:1, 2)
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.”

• See God’s Natural Creation (Psa 19:1, 2)
• Read God’s Supernatural Revelation (Psa 19:7-11)

2. Consider the POWER of God’s REVELATION! (Psa 19:7-11)
“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandments of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb….there is great reward.”

• Restoration (v 7)
• Transformation (v 7)
• Jubilation (v 8)
• Illumination (v 8)
• Satisfaction (vv 9, 10)
• Compensation (v 11)

3. Embrace the PEACE of God thru Scriptural MEDITATION! (Psa 19:12-14)
“Cleanse thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant from presumptuous sins…Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

• Trash In = Trash Out
• Truth In = Truth Out

Conclusion: We do not worship God’s CREATION, we worship the CREATOR – God (“EL”- where we get the word “Elohim,” which means Supreme Being – by the way, Paul mentions Jesus created it all – Col 1:16). Yet, we can admire His handiwork (Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the sun, moon, and stars, etc)…”How Great thou Art”! But equally important, is the Lord’s “Specific REVELATION,” namely the Bible…”perfect, sure, right, and pure.” The Word of God will keep us from SIN or SIN will keep us from the Word of God (Psa 19:7-13)! So, our prayer ought to be: “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.”

A Passion to Follow Jesus

Titus 2:11-14
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

Introduction: Recently, I received a call, right after it happened, from a person whose almost new truck had been vandalized – the windows were shot out, busted, and shattered to pieces by bullets from a gun for no reason. Needless to say, they were irate…..ANGRY….we would say RED-HOT MAD! – understandably so….to the point charges were filed.

However, after praying and coming to Church, God began to work on the perpetrators along with this couple who experienced this dastardly deed. Days later, they called and things were made RIGHT! Charges were dropped…. restitution was made, all because they included the Lord Jesus in the situation. Troubles and trials are unavoidable, but having a “PASSION for Jesus” helps lighten the load!

Are you facing any troubles today? Include Jesus in the solution. Paul presses Titus about (2) points to ponder concerning having a PASSION to follow our risen Lord and soon coming Bridegroom:

1. A PASSION to follow Jesus by LIVING RIGHT! (Titus 2:11, 12)
“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.”

• Being right is all because of God’s “AMAZING GRACE” which initiates salvation (Titus 2:11)
{“Salvation” is the word soterios – see Eph 2:8, 9}
• Doing right is all because of God’s “ABOUNDING GRACE” which activates separation (Titus 2:12)

2. A PASSION to follow Jesus in this life by LOOKING RIGHT! (Titus 2:13, 14)
“Looking for that blessed hope, and glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ: Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”

• God’s Grace looks in the RIGHT place! (Titus 2:13)
• God’s grace trusts in the RIGHT person! (Titus 2:14)
{“Purify” is the word katharise, which means to cleanse}

Conclusion: Remember; it pays to follow Jesus! Not just as a “good luck charm” or a “spare tire” but rather, He calls us to have a “PASSION” (strong desire) to include Him in our life as our Lord & Savior! Then and only then, does He guide us, cleanse us, and fill us to live a supernatural life that cannot be humanly explained, but divinely experienced.

“I have decided to follow Jesus!”

Dr. Randy Reese

The Best Bargains

2 Corinthians 8 and 9

Introduction: How many of you like a BARGAIN? Speaking of bargains, my granddad used to spend hours cutting out of the paper coupons that would save money. Then he would pass some of those coupons along to us grandchildren at Christmas time. He was known as “Thrifty”! Paul, on one of his missionary journeys, wrote a second letter to the believers at Corinth (who had money), encouraging them to give to the Lord like other Churches had done; i.e, those in Macedonia (Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea). The money would be used to meet the needs of those less fortunate saints in Jerusalem. Three (3) steps were given to the believers that guarantee a BLESSING from God:

1. In order to Discover the BEST BARGAINS, we must 1st GIVE of OURSELVES to the Lord! (2 Cor 8:1-5)
“Moreover, brethren we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia. How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality….Praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.”

• His grace, freely given
• His grace, freely received
• His grace, freely lived

2. In order to Discover the BEST BARGAINS, we must GIVE of our SUBSTANCES (resources) to the Lord! (2 Cor 8:12-9:8)
“For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not…..Wherefore shew ye to them, and before the churches, the proof of your love, and of our boasting on your behalf….He which soweth sparingly shall reap sparingly; and he that soweth bountifully shall really bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

• Give from A willing mind (2 Cor 8:12)
• Give from A loving heart (2 Cor 8:24)
• Give from A cheerful hand (2 Cor 9:6-8)
{“cheerful” is the word hilarios… our word hilarious!}
Do we give hilariously?

3. In order to Discover the BEST BARGAINS, we must receive God’s best BARGAIN, JESUS CHRIST, and GIVE our SERVICE to Him! (2 Cor 9:15)
“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work…Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”

• Best Bargain in us – God’s grace (2 Cor 9:14)
• Best Bargain to discover for us – God’s UNSPEAKABLE gift, Jesus Christ (2 Cor 9:15)

Conclusion: Giving is a FAITH thing….a TRUST thing….and a STEWARDSHIP thing. We are not OWNERS, we are MANAGERS of what God has entrusted to us. It’s all His anyway. Can He trust me? You? Our God gave His very BEST – The Gift of all gifts, the Lord Jesus! Have you given yourself to our Lord? Why not right now? Have you given (trusted) your substance to our Lord? Are you giving your service to Jesus? If so, you have discovered the BEST BARGAIN!
