Proof You Are a Child of God

Text: 1 John 5:18
 
Introduction: Do you ever doubt your salvation? Does the enemy ever whisper in your ear,” if your were a ‘CHILD of GOD’ you wouldn’t do that…or think that”? How can we tell we are saved? Do you have assurance?
 
John writes in his epistle to believers and discusses three (3) ways to tell your are a CHILD of GOD:
 

1. A CHILD of GOD will not Wallow in Sin! (1John 5:18)

“18We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.”

  • The word “know” is οἶδα, which means I know, remember, appreciate.
  • The words “born of God” is γεννάω, which means I beget (of the male), (of the female) I bring forth, give birth to.
  • The word “sinneth” is ἁμαρτάνω
Transliteration: hamartanó
Phonetic Spelling: (ham-ar-tan’-o)
Definition: to miss the mark, do wrong,: I miss the mark, I sin, commit a sin (against God); sometimes the idea of sinning against a fellow-creature is present.
Tense: This word is in the present tense and is understood as “continual” “habitual” sin….not a slip.
 

Why does a CHRISTian not “live” habitually in sin? Because he or she has been made a new creation. (2Cor 5:17)

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

We have a new Master! (Rom 6:6; Gal 2:20; 1John 1:7-10)
 

2. A CHILD of GOD will be Protected by God! (1John 5:18)

“18We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.”

  • A CHILD of God will have OVERCOMING Power over the WORLD! (1John 5:4,5)

“5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? Power over the WORLD! 4For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

  • A CHILD of God will have OVERCOMING Power through prayer because of Jesus Christ! (1John 5:14,15)

“4And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”

Praise God for answered prayers, according to His will!
 

3. A CHILD of GOD will not be possessed by the devil! (1John 5:18)

“18We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.”

  • A CHILD of God will have OVERCOMING Power over the devil because of Jesus Christ! (1John 3:8)

“8He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”

The devil’s grip has been broken by Jesus! (Col 2:13-15)

“14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”
 
Conclusion: Our Lord wants His children to be secure and confident in His GREAT SALVATION! Are you secure? Check up on your experience with Jesus. Why not evaluate your life right now? If it does not line up with the Bible, then call out to Jesus to save you, forgive you, and trust Him to do it. If you have done that already, then PRAISE Him now and forever!
