Throw out the Anchor that Holds

Introduction: Have you ever been out in a boat that kept drifting along the current, carrying you where you did not want to go, without an anchor? That happened down in South America on a fast-moving river. While on a mission trip in the deep rainforest between Venezuela and Guyana, our boat motor quit working due to being out of gas! With 12 missionaries from different countries, we helplessly drifted down the river, unable to stop or guide the vessel. We desperately needed an anchor to throw out. Do you need an anchor right now? Are you drifting along in life, needing to stop? This passage of Scripture speaks volumes to our life.

1. Will you throw out the anchor because you are drifting in life with things OUT of CONTROL? (Heb. 6:17) – “Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath.”

First, look at the word “heirs.” It is κληρονόμος, which means a sharer by lot, i.e. an inheritor. It can mean a possessor. In other words, if you are a believer in Jesus Christ, then you are an inheritor! He has promised.

Secondly, look at the word “counsel.” βουλή means purpose, plan, counsel, decision, motives. The bottom line is Jesus Christ has promised that since we are the recipients of His inheritance, then we can trust Him. Are you trusting Jesus?

2. Will you throw out an anchor as you drift in life because there are some things you can CONTROL? (Heb. 6:18) – “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”

Check out the word “consolation.” It is παράκλησις, which means comfort, exhortation, or encouragement. Do you need comfort or encouragement? Probably, we all do!

3. Will you throw out an anchor in life because as you are drifting in life, remember JESUS CHRIST is in CONTROL? (Heb. 6:19) – “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil.”

The word “soul” is ψυχή—it has to do with our mind, will, and emotions. Again, Jesus is “sure” and can be trusted! He is an anchor for the soul!

Conclusion: Don’t forget to “Throw out the Anchor that Holds!” Do it now.
