Introduction: Put your thinking cap on! Get your Bible out. Follow along this great study of God’s Word. You will be BLESSED! Hopefully, a light will come on. More specifically, get ready to DEFEND your FAITH!! Now it is true that the context of this verses in Romans 11 reveal God’s plan for Israel. But Gentiles are included. But how? Where does this fit in with the Lord’s overall plan with Israel.
1. First, Romans 11 deals with ISRAEL’S PAST Old Testament COVENANTS! (Rom 11:1,2) – “I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew.”
BOTTOM LINE: God is not finished with ISRAEL, in spite of what some are teaching and preaching today! In fact, Paul makes it clear that it is the ALMIGHTY GOD who has allowed their {ISRAEL’S} EYES to be BLINDED!! (Rom 11:7,8)
“What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded. (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.”
Keep in mind that the Lord called and established an UNCONDITIONAL COVENANT with ABRAHAM along with DAVID and their descendants—the Jews, ISRAEL. This COVENANT is only applicable to those ISRAELITES {before Jesus Christ died and arose} who “believe” God by “faith”; subsequently, they were saved and forgiven. But it still applies to them to be rewarded during the millennium reign of CHRIST.
However, after Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, ISRAELITES can be saved—forgiven today through His redeeming blood, thus becoming a part of the New Testament CHURCH.
Please distinguish between GOD’S plan for ISRAEL in the OLD TESTAMENT and ISRAEL in the NEW TESTAMENT {after Jesus’s resurrection}. Connect the dots. See the big picture of the Bible. Continue reading.
2. Second, Romans 11 goes further and deals with JEWS but in these verses how GENTILES were grafted into the CHURCH COVENANT after God’s COVENANT with ISRAEL in the Old TESTAMENT but now the differences in the PRESENT! (Rom 11:11) – “I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy…. For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office.”
Notice how the Holy Spirit led Paul to use the illustration of a wild branch being grafted into an olive tree. “And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree.”
Here, he is speaking of God’s PLAN with ISRAEL after the OLD COVENANT (O.T.) and the NEW COVENANT which INCLUDED the GENTILES in His plan for the CHURCH. Although the GENTILES in the Church age DO NOT REPLACE God’s COVENANTS with ISRAEL!!
Conclusion: Now what do you think? Can you UNPACK ROMANS chapter 11? Get started and tell your family and friends. Why? There is so much confusion and misunderstanding about God’s plan for both Jews and Gentiles, more specifically ISRAEL today.
