The Jury on Jesus
Introduction: The Jury is out. Was Jesus Christ really God? Some say that He was, others say that He was not God. Where is the proof? How can we know? You must decide. Either He was Who He said He was, or He was a liar, a lunatic, a legend, or Lord.
The bottom line is either He was a MAD MAN, a BAD MAN, or the GOD MAN.
Actually, that is one of the reasons that the apostle Paul was led by the Spirit of God to write the epistle to the Colossian believers. By the way, that includes Christians today.
The text before us is the following: “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.”
1. What has Jesus done for those who trust Him? Taken “Out of” brought “Into”! (Col. 1:13–14) – “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”
Be sure that there are only two kingdoms—LIGHT and DARKNESS. That means that there are only two Kings…KING JESUS vs. Subtle Satan. In which kingdom do you belong? By the way, the word “delivered” is ῥύομαι, which means rescued, or set free. Have you been “set free”?
I love the word “redemption.” It is the word ἀπολύτρωσις. This word actually has to do with releasing, or paying a ransom in full. Does that make sense? Jesus has PAID our sin DEBT in full through His blood, releasing the payment we owed by paying it HIMSELF! Subsequently, we go free!
2. Who was Jesus? (Col. 1:15) – “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.”
Speaking of the person of Jesus Christ, here the reference is “the image” of the invisible God. Meaning the invincible God became the visible God seen in the person of Jesus Christ. The Ancient of Days became the Infant of Days.
Along that line, the word “image” is εἰκών, which means likeness, or representative. In other words, Jesus was the “exact representation” of God in the flesh. The Word became flesh (John 1:14). So, since Jesus was declared to be the “visible” God, it seems to be crystal clear that He deserves allegiance and loyalty. Are you giving Him His rightful place as God?
3. How do you know that Jesus was God? (Col. 1:16) – “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
Another evidence that demands attention concerning Jesus Christ is listed here unmistakably; namely, that He “created” all things! Therefore, only God created all things, meaning He is Creator God. He deserves worship and praise because of His credentials as God. Is He Lord of your life?
Conclusion: The verdict is in. JESUS CHRIST was, and is, and ever shall be GOD!
You must decide and believe! Do you believe? Of course you do, right? Can you take these Scriptures and explain them to someone who is in doubt about Jesus being God? Go and tell somebody.
