Introduction: David was in a dark place! Have you ever been in a dark place? How about right now? How can you get out? This great Psalm tells us exactly how the Lord will bring us out and take us into His PEACE and Presence. Follow the steps of David and see how he made it out of darkness and into God’s Sweet Relief!
1. Prayer Works if You Work It! (Psa 142:1–2) – “I cried unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication… I poured out my complaint before him; I shewed before him my trouble.”
The word “trouble” is צָרָה (tsaw-raw’), which means adversary, adversity, affliction, anguish, distress, or tribulation.
2. Doors Open if You Will Walk Through Them! (Psa 142:3–5) – “When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.”
The word “overwhelmed” is עָטַף (ah-TAHF). It means to fail, to faint, to be feeble, to hide oneself, or to swoon.
3. Go Free from Prison to Praise! (Psa 142:7) – “Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.”
Our Lord deserves praise! He has been good! He is good! That is His nature. This does not mean He gives us everything we want all the time. Instead, He gives us what we need. Plus, He has promised to be with us. After all, He is the only REFUGE that does not move! Run safely into His strong arms today!
Conclusion: When we are in a dark place we can find SWEET RELIEF in JESUS; relief from our sins, our self, and our society. Find that SWEET RELIEF today.
