Introduction: I love Psalm 23! The shepherd boy David, who later became the King of Israel, learned to develop his relationship with our Lord.
Suggestion: It will do us good to do the same. Why not read over this Psalm out loud. Think about it. Meditate on it. It will be a blessing!
1. Perfect Satisfaction!
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psa 23:1)
One little boy read this verse in the following way. “The Lord is my Shepherd, He knows all my wants”!
He was right. The Lord knows all of our wants.
2. Perfect Direction!
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” (Psa 23:2)
A good shepherd will lead his sheep to greener pastures. We are told that Sheep will not drink from running water.
3. Perfect Restoration!
“He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” (Psa 23:3)
The word “restore” is שׁוּב, (shoob), which means to turn back, return. Jesus is able to turn back our soul.
4. Perfect Protection!
“4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psa 23:4)
The shadow of death infers there is a light somewhere. Jesus is the LIGHT of the world (John 8:12). While walking “through” the valley of the shadow of death, Jesus who is the light, must be on the other side.
5. Perfect Celebration!
“5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psa 23:5, 6)
Here is the great promise that we shall enjoy, being with Jesus in the house of the Lord forever.
Conclusion: What a great Word from the Lord! Psalm 23 is loaded with truth. Jesus can be seen Perfect in everything!!
