Stirring Up the Gift

Introduction: Does the GIFT of GOD in you need “stirring up”? Have you gotten…

“COMPLACENT”?
“INDIFFERENT”?
“CYNICAL”?
“NEGATIVE”?
“DISTRACTED”?
“FRUSTRATED”?
“DISCOURAGED”?

If so, the GIFT of God may need to be “stirred up.” But how? Paul writes to his son in the Lord, Timothy, while giving us some clues as to how to “stir up the gift of God.”

1. By the Power of Prevailing Prayer! (2Tim 1:3)

“3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day.”

Persevering in prayer is powerful! (Luke 11, 18, etc). Don’t give up.

2. By the Power of Remembrance of those who have “Poured” into us! (2Tim 1:5)

“5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.”

A godly heritage can be traced back in all of our lives as in Timothy’s. (Can I testify?) Had it not been for Spiritual leaders, preachers, etc in my life, no doubt, I would not be where I am today! “To God be the glory”! (Not that I’ve arrived…. instead I’m pressing onward until one day when I see my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!) It will be worth it all!

3. By the Power of Passing on the mantle of God’s anointing! (2Tim 1:6)

“6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.”

The word “stir up” is ἀναζωπυρέω,(an-ad-zo-poor-eh’-o), which means stir up the fire, fan the flame of.

The picture is that of a fire which is about to be extinguished. But because of the “fanning of the flickering flames” the embers are ignited once again, and burn brightly. Is your fire about to go out?

Conclusion: It appears that at times the “GIFT of GOD” needs to be “STIRRED UP”! Will you take a minute and ask the Lord to “Stir up” the gift that is in you?….all for His glory.

Dr. Randy Reese
