A High Price To Follow Christ

Introduction: While salvation is free (Eph 2:8,9), discipleship is costly. According to Jesus, there is a cross involved. And it involves every follower of Him. By the way, a cross means DEATH – death to SELF!

Sadly, today, most followers it seems are content with a shallow CHRISTian life….a fire insurance policy. But a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ is willing to “PAY the PRICE” to follow CHRIST. Why? Because the intimate believer understands the REWARDS in heaven at the JUDGMENT SEAT of Christ are awaiting. Besides that listen to the words of our Lord Jesus.

1. Counting the Cost! An illustration of a King & a Builder (Luke 14:25-33)

“And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them, 26If any man come to me, and hat not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? 29Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, 30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? 32Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. 33So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.”

Are you counting the cost? Money? Time? Friends? Lifestyle?

2. Rewards for following Jesus! (Mark 10:28-31)

“28Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. 29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, 30But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. 31But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.”

Don’t forget the REWARDS! Instead of being short-sighted, the wise CHRISTIAN looks ahead.

3. The Choice is Ours! (John 6:66-69)

“66From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. 69And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.”

Did you notice that Jesus did not make His disciples follow Him? He gave them a choice.

Conclusion: Following Jesus closely can be costly, as Peter discovered. But following Jesus from a distance is more costly….cost of rewards, cost of fellowship and blessings in this life. Which one are you choosing?
