Stay in Your Lane

Introduction: Have you ever had a car swerve into your lane and almost hit you? What did you do? Tell the truth! You probably said, “STAY IN YOUR LANE! But honestly, we might have been the one swerving into someone else’s lane too — just saying…

Peter did just that. I love the way our Lord Jesus handles people who need to stay in their lane.

 1. Peter swerved into someone else’s LANE! (John 21:20–21) – “Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following… Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?”

Do you recall Peter’s denial of Jesus? After boasting that he would die for Him, our Lord — who knows us better than we know ourselves — predicted Peter’s faith failure.

Isn’t it interesting that Peter’s denial happened around a fire, and his restoration also took place around a fire? Peter swerved into John’s lane!

2. Jesus corrected Peter because he swerved into somebody’s LANE! (John 21:22) – “Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.”

Bottom line: stop comparing yourself to others — just follow Jesus!Have you gotten out of your lane? Jesus will redirect you to get back in it.

3. Stay in your LANE! (John 21:23) – “Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?”

Jesus was not saying John would still be alive at His return. But Peter got back in his lane and finished faithful (see Acts 2; 10; 1 Pet. 4; 2 Pet. 1–3).

Are you determined to finish faithful? Will you stay in your lane?

Conclusion: We all drift out of our lane at times — through a bad attitude, jealousy, comparison, or just being nosy. But the good news is Jesus can get you back in your lane.

That’s why we should love Him!

Love y’all,
