The Passion Week: Calvary’s DOOM

Introduction: For the last few days, these devotions have carried us through the steps of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ during what is called PASSION WEEK. Do you remember that week? Our prayer is that by tracing the journey of JESUS to the cross and beyond will activate a greater love and devotion to Him, which will result in a more dedicated lifestyle that glorifies the One that laid down His life for us {and then took it up again}. What about it?

Starting with the “Anointing” of JESUS, imagine the scene. Next, Jesus goes with His disciples to the UPPER ROOM. From there, He goes to GETHSEMANE’S GLOOM! Follow closely, because next is the KANGAROO COURT BUFFOONS, and now CALVARY’S DOOM.

“Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS .”(John 19:16–19)

1. Beneath the Cross! (John 19:23-24) – “They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.”

Whereas Jesus could have called 10,000 angels, He voluntarily laid down His life to be a substitute for our sins. Praise His name! Are you thankful?

2. From the Cross! (Matt 27:46) – “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Among the other sayings from the cross, this one is very significant. Why? Because Jesus Christ, the Son of God, “became sin for us” in order that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21). Make the connection. Ponder the power. Shout for joy! Humble your heart. Surrender your life.

3. Above the Cross! (Matt 27:37) – “And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

Although He was rejected by the Jews primarily, Jesus Christ came offering the kingdom to the Jewish people. Yet, His kingdom has been temporarily postponed until He {The King} comes again. Will you pray, “Thy Kingdom come …”?

4. Beyond the Cross! (Matt 27:60) – “And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.”

Just a comma, not a period, follows CALVARY’S DOOM as we travel further in the steps of JESUS CHRIST during the PASSION WEEK.
