Magnificent Mothers

Introduction: Mothers are special! God made them with multiple abilities. We are told women have more nerve endings than men. {That’s why my wife says I’m getting on her nerves!!} But on another note, Solomon writes about a godly woman {You might wonder if she ever sleeps?}.

1. She’s a compliment! (Prov 31:10-12) – “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life”

2. She’s constructive! (Prov 31:13-17) – “She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.”

3. She’s consecrated! (Prov 31:28-30) – “Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”

Conclusion: What a woman with balance! Her priorities are fixed. Her mission is clear. Her influence is powerful!!

No wonder she’s called a priceless jewel in the hand of the Lord.

Pastor Randy Reese

DEPENDABLE

Introduction: Are you dependable? Can God count on you? By the way, this does not mean perfection! Rather, it begs the question: has your life been brought “under” the Lordship of Jesus Christ to the point that He has molded {and is} your will to be bent toward His will? Admittedly, we are all still in this process.

Today’s devotion will share spiritual insights and disciplines that should move every believer toward being more dependable.

Get the picture. Paul is in prison. Why? Because he had been preaching and teaching the Word of God. He took the known world during his day by storm, refuting false teaching but at the same time proclaiming biblical truth. It literally shook up towns, cities, and provinces for the glory of the Lord! People were being saved, churches were being built, and the gospel was spreading like wildfire! Of course, persecution followed as well.

Meanwhile, one of the assembly of believers located in the area of Philippi were directly involved in this great movement of God. So while being incarcerated and awaiting martyrdom, Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write a letter that is included in the canon of Scripture to a specific Church called Philippians. There were two GIANT-KILLERS and FAITHFUL SERVANTS who were recommended by the flaming evangelist Paul and used by the Lord in a mighty way.

Who were these “TRUSTWORTHY” soldiers of the cross?
Timothy and Epaphroditus were their names.

Being co-laborers together in the vineyard of the Lord’s work, countless millions have heard their names because of their FAITHFULNESS! They were DEPENDABLE.

(Philippians 2:19–25) – “But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state. For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state… Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.”

Realizing the inevitable while facing martyrdom, the man of God, Paul, writes that he was ready to be “offered” as a sacrifice because of their service. It was all in the providential Will of the Father.

(Philippians 2:17) – “Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.”

Apparently, the believers in this special Church had been spiritual partners with the aged, old soldier Paul—ministering to his needs while faithfully serving Jesus Christ.

Are you faithfully serving Jesus Christ?
What changes do you need to ask God to make in your life?
Rearrangement of priorities? Crucify the flesh?

Bottom line: Because of their TRUSTWORTHINESS and DEPENDABILITY, those in the Church who were followers of Jesus Christ were told to honor these SERVANT LEADERS.

(Philippians 2:29) – “Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation.”

Interestingly enough, the word “reputation” is ἔντιμος (pronounced en’-tee-mos). It means honorable or precious. Furthermore, it has to do with holding in high esteem.

How about it?
Do you want to be TRUSTWORTHY?
Would you like for our great God to be able to DEPEND on you?

Let’s face it—we can certainly DEPEND on Him!
Shouldn’t He be able to DEPEND on us?

Dr. Randy Reese

Serving with Purpose

Introduction: Are you discovering your purpose in life? Our God created us both in His image and for His glory. Learning to be a follower of Jesus Christ involves being available for Him to use you. Next, after availability comes responsibility. He has given every believer at least one spiritual gift. Do you know what yours is? Are you exercising them?

Serving Him by serving His Church is His divinely orchestrated method. Ultimately, every follower of Jesus Christ should be ready to be empowered by the Holy Spirit for the purpose of SERVING. This devotion will focus on SERVING with PURPOSE.

1. Greatness is found in Servanthood! (Matthew 20:26–28) – “But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Just as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did not come to be served, instead He served others, we are commissioned to do the same. Not only was Jesus Christ a great servant, though He was God (Philippians 2:5–7), but He was also the greatest leader that ever lived! While millions of books and movies have been made of great leaders, all one really needs to do to discover the GREATEST LEADER that walked upon the face of the earth is to study the life of Christ. Have you done that?

2. Purpose is discovered in Serving others! (Philippians 2:1–4) – “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”

Humility, which is the opposite of arrogance, is a God-given characteristic of SERVANTHOOD. Rather than having ulterior motives in serving—what’s in it for me—here Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, reminds those in Philippi to be a blessing to other believers by serving.

3. Unity in Serving! (Ephesians 4:1–3) – “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Did you see the word “love”? That is the key. Humility, charity, and unity are the key ingredients in serving. Are you lacking any?

Conclusion: Once we discover our PURPOSE through SERVING, then we become a useful tool in the MASTER POTTER’S hand. His hand then forms and shapes us into a worthy vessel meet for His use. All for His glory!

Serving with Joy

Introduction: Does it make you happy when you “Serve” the Lord? It should. If it does not, then perhaps you need to check up! According to the Psalmist, God’s people should SERVE the Lord with gratitude. What should be included with SERVING our wonderful Lord?

1. Praise! (Psalm 100:1) – “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.”

The words “joyful noise” are the word רוּעַ (rua, or roo-ah), which means to shout, or to cry out. It can mean to make a loud noise, or to sound an alarm. In other words, what is in the heart of the believer has to come out and be expressed verbally through praise because of who God is. Are you praising the Lord?

2. Joy! (Psalm 100:2) – “Serve the LORD with gladness.”

The word “serve” is עָבַד (abad): which means to work, serve, or to labor. It can also mean worship. What does this include? Does it mean just going to church? Sitting? Soaking? And souring? Of course not! Instead, it has to do with being available to be at the Holy Spirit’s disposal. Are you there? Can you be counted on to “work”? Labor? Serve?

3. Worship and Reverence! (Psalm 100:3) – “Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.”

Do you see the progression? First, we must “know” that HE is GOD! Then that leads to understanding that we are not self-made men and women. Figuratively, we are His sheep in His pasture. As sheep, we are to obey the Great Shepherd’s bidding. How are you doing? Can you hear the Shepherd calling you?

4. Thanksgiving! (Psalm 100:4) – “Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

THANKSGIVING is THANKSLIVING!

5. Adoration! (Psalm 100:5) – “For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”

Has Jesus been GOOD to you? If so, have you been GOOD to Him?

Conclusion: If we have the right motives, focus, and attitude about our relationship with Jesus Christ, then we will experience JOY while SERVING our Lord. Do you have JOY in the Lord?

Developing Servant Leaders

Introduction: Is leadership an innate ability? Is a person born that way? Or does it require development? If we take examples in the Bible, it appears the GREATEST Leader of all, JESUS CHRIST, developed those He chose, even though Judas FAILED the test. Consider these perspectives:

1. Where have you been in 1st FOLLOWING Jesus? (Matt 4:18-22) – “And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.”

These were men who both saw and trusted JESUS to lead them. Are you willing to TRUST Jesus to lead you? You’ve trusted Him to forgive you, haven’t you? Now take it another step and let Him guide you. But how can we do that?

2. Where are you at right now in FOLLOWING Jesus? (Heb 12:5-11) – “And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.”

Are you willing to be CORRECTED by His WORD? His Spirit? Through others in authority? This is the difficult part because of our independence. But in order to have “SPIRITUAL” influence, we must be willing to be trained and corrected by our Lord.

3. Where are you going in FOLLOWING Jesus? (John 21:21-23) – “Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?”

Peter, like us, was more concerned about what was going on with John than FOLLOWING Jesus. This is a GREAT lesson for us. Why? Because we look around and wonder about people instead of FOLLOWING Jesus.

Conclusion: So where have you been? Where are you at? And where are you going? The words to the song come to mind….”I have decided to FOLLOW Jesus”!

Serving with a Good Attitude When You Have Other Things to Do!

Introduction: Have you ever struggled when you have had other things going on, but you were called upon to “SERVE” the Lord? Like watching an extremely important ballgame, for example, a playoff or championship game? Like having your family want to go somewhere at that time? Like when you were tired? Like when you could be making money instead of volunteering?

Here is a “SERVING JESUS” test with five thought-provoking points to ponder for you to evaluate your SERVICE to JESUS:

1. The real measurement of “SERVICE” to Jesus through His Church can be weighed by our SACRIFICE!
(Luke 10:33–37) – “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.”

While it will definitely COST something in SERVING our Lord JESUS CHRIST, don’t forget about the REWARDS waiting—along with the CHARACTER that He is building! Are you willing to PAY THE PRICE to follow CHRIST? It is worth it!

2. The real measurement of “SERVICE” to Jesus through His Church can be determined by our MOTIVE!
(1 Corinthians 3:12–15) – “Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

One day in the future, all that we have done in SERVING will be TESTED. Either it will pass with eternal REWARDS, or fail while going up in smoke. Which will it be for you?

3. The real measurement of “SERVICE” to Jesus through His Church can be achieved only by rearranging our PRIORITIES! (Matthew 6:33; Matthew 22:37–38) – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

Of course, in the context of this passage, food, clothing, and worry are the concerns. But Jesus redirects those concerns to His will for our life.

Bottom line: If we put Him in His rightful place, everything else will be met. Do you trust Him?

4. The real measurement of “SERVICE” to Jesus through His Church can be examined by our FOCUS!
(Romans 12:15; Hebrews 12:1–3) – “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”

Enthusiasm is contagious! Put your heart into SERVING JESUS! He will BLESS you!!

5. The real measurement of “SERVICE” to Jesus through His Church will be JUDGED at the JUDGMENT SEAT of CHRIST! (2 Corinthians 5:10) – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

Time will tell! Are you looking forward to what is described here—namely the JUDGMENT SEAT of CHRIST? Or are you trying not to think about it?

Conclusion: Well, how did you do? Truthfully, we have all failed at times. However, hopefully, this simple devotion will help us get back on track and prepare to stand before JESUS CHRIST as He gives out REWARDS!

Holding On But Letting Go

Introduction: Are there some things that you need to “let go” of? Music? Friends? Habits? Criticism? Fault-finding? Anger? Overeating? Spending? Fussing? What about complaining?

But on the other hand, are there some things that you need to “Hold on” to? Hold on to your faith in Jesus! Hold on to the promises of God! Hold on to your eternal security! Hold on to Hope in the Lord! Hold on to the Goodness of God!

Consider for a moment by “Holding On” to this devotion:

1. Let Go of Murmuring and Complaining! (Phil 2:14) – “Do all things without murmurings and disputings.”

The word “murmurings” is γογγυσμός (pronounced gong-goos-MOS). Technically speaking, it means grumbling or complaining. With all the troubles and trials that are coming against us daily, do you find yourself “pouting” instead of “shouting”? Are you going to “chose to lose”? Or, are you going to “make a choice to rejoice”?

It is up to you! Why not make up your mind today? Remember: “Our Attitude controls our Altitude!”

2. Hold on to your Bible! (Phil 2:16) – “Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.”

The words “holding forth” are the Greek word ἐπέχω, which means to hold upon, to pay attention to, or to give heed to. In other words, Hold on!

Conclusion: If you can “let go” but “hold on”, then there is no doubt you will shine as a bright light through a dark night!

“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world.” (Phil 2:15)

TURN the LIGHT ON!

Repairing or Replacing Your Spiritual Life

Introduction: Recently, a tire went flat on our truck. After pumping it up with air, it became apparent that the leak was coming from a bad place on the inside of the tire. Should you try to “repair the tire”? Or should you just go ahead and “replace it”? This example illustrates every Christian’s dilemma. For instance, a bad attitude needs to be replaced! But an overzealous and critical witness probably just needs repairing.

1. A Bad Attitude needs Replacing! (Luke 15:11-13) – “And he said, A certain man had two sons: And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living. And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.”

Fast forward. After hitting rock bottom, the boy’s attitude has changed! With a repentant heart, he returns home with a grateful heart. A dose of hard times cured his ingratitude which turned into appreciation for what he had! Do you need a change of attitude? God has been good!

2. An overzealous witness and critic needs Repairing! (Mark 14:4-7) – “And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said, Why was this waste of the ointment made? For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. And Jesus said, Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me.”

We all have “blind spots”! Did you know that? Oftentimes we have tunnel vision. While on the one hand we see some things, but on the other we can’t see everything. That means that we can “think we are in the right” but really “be in the wrong.” Has that ever happened to you? Look around, it may be the case right now.

Conclusion: Is there anything in your life, like attitude, that needs replacing? Call upon Jesus. Admit your negativity. Let’s face it. It happens to everyone. Ask the Holy Spirit to both cleanse you and renew you.

And next, perhaps you have wanted someone to be saved, or get in Church, and have gone “overboard” or “overkill”, and inadvertently become critical. Pray for wisdom and compassion instead of being critical or judgmental.

Either way, our Lord is in the “Repairing and Replacing” business! Thank God!!

What Next After the Resurrection?

Introduction: From the Upper Room to the Garden Bloom to Calvary’s Doom to the Empty Tomb to the Throne Room and finally to Coming Soon, God’s redemptive plan is revealed.
After conquering death and rising from the tomb, Jesus instructed His disciples to “wait” to be clothed from on high. What did He mean? Why did He tell them to wait? Were they lacking something important? This devotion will answer some of these thought-provoking questions.

1. The Purpose for Waiting! (Luke 24:49) – “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”

Did you get that? Even though the disciples had been sent out on a mission by our Lord Jesus prior to His resurrection to preach, heal, etc., yet they, like us today, desperately needed the power source—the Holy Ghost! So they were instructed to wait for the power instead of attempting to produce this mysterious source in the flesh. Do you find yourself waiting as well?

2. The Power through Waiting! (Acts 2:1–4) – “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost.”

What an incredible day! The day of Pentecost, which was the fulfillment of Jesus Christ’s promise (John 14, 15, 16). Howbeit, it was a temporary fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy but not completely. That will happen during the tribulation—another devotion for another time.

3. The Plan from Waiting! (Acts 1:8) – “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Hallelujah! Don’t you love this verse? Talking about vision? Speaking of missions? This amazing verse summarizes our lifelong calling! Are you fulfilling it?

Conclusion: Resurrection power is available! As a child of God, it is at our disposal. But please understand, there are biblical principles that need to be followed before we can tap into this unlimited power source. Hopefully, after reading this devotion, it will bring clarity which will turn into practicality because of our Lord’s sovereignty! All for His glory!!

God ’s Good Pleasure

Introduction: Did you know that God made us in order to have a relationship with Him? In doing so, He is glorified. You may be asking, “How does that happen?” The Scripture before us today helps explain the process. Check it out.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to share these devotions with others. And may our Lord Jesus be glorified!

1. What is God doing in us? (Philippians 2:13) – “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

God is working to make us more like His Son, Jesus Christ. Paul explained this clearly in Romans 8:29. Through the troubles, trials, and challenges of life, we are being conformed into His image (Romans 12:1–2).

2. How is God working in us? (Philippians 2:13) – “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

Our Lord is molding and shaping us—He’s even changing our “want to’s!” Have you noticed that you no longer want to do some of the things you used to do? And now, you want to do things you once didn’t—like reading your Bible, praying, or talking with others about their relationship with God. Isn’t that AMAZING? He’s changing how we think and feel. Can you testify?

3. Why is God working in us? (Philippians 2:13) – “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”

Ultimately, it’s about honoring the life God has given us. Does He find pleasure and receive glory in your life? Are there any changes you need to make?

Conclusion: You do want to please our Lord, don’t you? Otherwise, you probably wouldn’t be reading this devotion. So here’s the bottom line:

Keep letting Him have His way with you. Let Him work in—then work out what He works in—all for His glory.

Love y’all,
Dr. Randy Reese
